Welcome to Sand Hill Kennels

Sand Hill Kennel training pen is now available for rent 3 days a week. The renter will be able to choose the day(s). There will be a 3 dog limit per day. Time will be daylight until dark. No alcohol or guns allowed. If renting multiple days, we will furnish kennel space for your dogs. Bring your children to help start a new pup or to give your finished dog a good work out. You are welcome to visit at any time to look at our facility and to get more information or any help you may need working with your dog. There are 2 motels 15 minutes from us for anyone wanting to make a long weekend of it. A deposit will be required to reserve your day(s). We are located about five miles east of Oakdale, LA on Hwy 10 (45 miles south of Alexandria, LA).

Our primary activity is squirrel dog training. We take 4 dogs per month at 7 months old and try to guide them along the path to becoming good solid tree dogs.

Each dog we work has his or her own 4’ X 10’ kennel, their own water and feed and are worked individually four days per week, weather permitting.

We have two training pens. One is ¼ acre with a large squirrel pen. We use this pen for puppies who have had no experience with squirrels and also to gauge the reaction of all the dogs to the sight and smell of a squirrel.

Our working pen consists of 4 acres of large mixed pine and hardwood timber with both high dry areas and low wet areas. In this pen we have seven squirrel feeders placed so that the squirrel has to go to the ground to access and exit the feeder.

We also have five squirrel nest boxes and maintain a good population of squirrels year round.

We also have access to approximately 900 acres of private woods directly behind this large pen to use as the dogs advance.

We have a full time on site helper at the kennels who is mostly involved in sanitation and feeding.

We are in the kennels or in the woods seven days a week and look for any health problems. We have a vet service that is on call 24 hours/day for any emergencies.

We feed Purina dog food, puppy and adult. We require that all dogs be up to date with all shots. Any dog staying with us over 30 days, the owner will provide heart worm treatment.

Dog owners are welcome to observe or participate in the training sessions at any time. Call when you can be here and we will schedule your dog for that day.
